Welcome

The Spanish Club, Hogar Español, is an institution established in 1969 in Johnston St, Fitzroy. It quickly became the heart of the Spanish Community in Melbourne. Hogar Español translates to Spanish Home, and as the name suggests, the Spanish Club’s initial aim was to provide a home away from home for the many Spanish immigrants who settled in Melbourne in the late fifties and early sixties. Although this is still a strong focus of the Club, we now also invite the General Public to join and partake in events, excursions, fiestas or a simple night of tapas and wine by becoming social club members. There are different levels of memberships to suit everyone. You don’t have to be Spanish to enjoy what the Club has to offer.

The Re-birth

In 1969 the Spanish Government purchased a former Masonic Hall in Johnson St, Fitzroy. Through the years some modifications and renovations were made to the building, however in 2018 a decision was made by the Members to join with GURNER for a $30 million redevelopment, which has given the Spanish Club a new lease of life, all the while keeping the building’s distinctive façade, but more importantly its beating heart.
